Kitchen Progress in Blanchard thanks
to
INWCF,
Margaret F Galbraith Fund
Blanchard
Area Seniors, Incorporated (BASIC)
recently completed the kitchen
center island at the Blanchard
Community Center thanks to a $7,500
grant awarded in 2010 through the
Margaret F. Galbraith Fund within
Inland Northwest Community
Foundation.
The island is
the main preparation area for foods
and storage of cooking utensils and
dry-goods. The project took nearly
a year to complete but it has been
well worth the wait and hard work.
The unique blue-pine cabinets were
designed by BASIC board members
(with community input) and custom
made, in Blanchard, by Cozy Cabin
Furniture. The stainless steel
counter top, and (required)
prep-sink were made by Krueger Sheet
Metal of Spokane, Clark’s Electric
of Newport installed the electrical
components and Floors N’ More of
Priest River, provided the finishing
touch of baseboards.
Along with this
wonderful progress comes a new
“Country Breakfast” program that
began in March and is operated
entirely by volunteers. Don Bishop,
a retired school teacher, is doing
the cooking and bringing new tastes
to Blanchard. The meals are
offered on select Mondays from 7
am-11 am at the Blanchard Community
Center, 685 Rusho. They are open to
all age and income levels and are
supported on a donation basis.
Two lower
cabinets and upper wall-mount units
are still needed before the kitchen
will be fully completed but, as it
is right now, it is fully functional
and licensed as a commercial-grade
kitchen. It has gotten great use
for fundraisers, meetings, potlucks
and special events. Additionally,
the kitchen is rented by Master
Chef, Steve Geving who teaches
monthly cooking classes and “Two
Cooks With Love” catering who will
be serving 6 elegant dinners this
summer.
We are proud of the kitchen progress
at the Blanchard Community Center
that was made possible through the
generosity of the Margaret F.
Galbraith Fund within Inland
Northwest Community Foundation. We
are equally proud of those who
dedicate their time, energy and
talent to make Blanchard a beautiful
and unique place to live.

Blanchard and the kitchen island

The novel, The Other Side of the Fence
centers around the Chinese burial
grounds between the eastern edge of the
Rathdrum Lions Club parking lot and the
city’s Pinegrove Cemetery. An unknown
number of Chinese immigrants were buried
in the immediate area, many having
worked on laying track for the Northern
Pacific Railroad. Little is known of
their ancestry or their exact
gravesites.
Back Book
Cover:
The Lions Club’s
decision to pave their parking lot is
halted when an old Chinese graveyard is
found. The discovery surprises everyone
except Wong Jie. Her parents are buried
there, and it is her wish to join her
ancestors when her time comes. Jie is 96
years old, and that may be soon. Molly,
her granddaughter, wants to help
preserve the cemetery and make Jie’s
wish come true. The North Idaho city
leaders would rather see a parking lot.
Molly and Jie have a fight on their
hands as they battle city hall.
The tale told by
Jie to Molly about their ancestors, the
Chinese immigrants brought in to help
build the Northern Pacific railroad in
the 1880s, is richly detailed in this
heartwarming, multi-generational story
of a people, a family and a town.
